Population And Settlement
During the first century BC Italy was under the Roman power, and stayed under that power until about the 5th century AD. The country of Italy is defined as "the entire Peninsula south of the Alps". It is the boot shaped country that sticks out into the Mediterranean Sea.
Around 700 BC, most of the tribes located in Italy were from the surrounding lands in the north or by sea across the Adriatic. These tribes arrived in Italy right around 700 BC and were called "INdo-Europeans" speaking the language "Italic", however the most dominant group was the Etruscans (historians are still trying to figure out where these Etruscans came from, but by about 500 BC they controlled most of central Italy. The southern part of the peninsula (including Sicily), however, was controlled by Greek colonies who settled in the coastal regions from about 700BC onwards. Following this Era was the middle ages. During the Middle Ages, they were invaded by the Ostrogoths, the Lombards, The Franks, And then the Fermanic Holy Roman Empire from 962 onward. The invasions ended by the end of the 11th century and trade began to flourish. "In the 12th century the Italian Cities Ruled by Holy Roman Empire campaigned for Autonomy. The result was that northern Italy became a group of Independent kingdoms, republics, and City-states.
During the Renaissance period (14th to 16th Century) there was a lot of change. In the beginning of the era, the northern states prospered while the central and southern Italian states were economically depressed. However there was a major period of growth and inspiration that led to all of the cities being able to flourish again and Rome being rebuilt. The Tuscan dialect then became the official Italian language.
Shortly after, in 1494, France invaded Northern Italy and many of the city-states collapsed. In 1527 Germany attacked Rome. The Spanish regained control in 1559 and lasted until 1713. In 1814 the congress of Vienna divided Italy into eight parts (most were still under foreign rule). Unification of the country occurred from 1814 to 1861 when all of the nations unified into what is now modern day Italy.
